Melinda Curless is the STEM Initiatives Consultant for the Kentucky Department of Education.  She began her career as an engineer, working more than 20 years in the fields of aerospace, environmental, and forensic engineering.  She became interested in education, obtained certification, and taught middle school science and mathematics before coming to the KDE in 2011, where she has contributed to the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, facilitates literacy and mathematics initiatives in support of Kentucky’s implementation of the Common Core, and is a key member of the planning team for Kentucky’s STEMx Network.

Ms. Curless has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, an MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Cincinnati, and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Eastern Kentucky University.  She is a registered Professional Engineer in Kentucky and Ohio.
