Benjamin Flores, Ph.D.

Dr. Benjamin C. Flores joined the faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in 1990 after receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University.   He is the Dean of the Graduate School and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering.  Dr. Flores is an expert in retention strategies for non-traditional undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).  From 1999 to 2007 he was the Project Director of the Model Institutions for Excellence Initiative, an institutional effort that aimed at increasing the number of Hispanics who pursued and earned STEM degrees.   Currently he is Director of the UT System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, the UT System Bridge to the Doctorate Program, and the UTEP PUENTES Program.  Through his work on student retention issues, he has gained international recognition as an expert in the effectiveness and impact of strategies for access to higher education.  Dr. Flores was recently recognized by President Barak Obama with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentorship (2010).
